Amazon mandates that any item exceeding dimensions of 18x14x8 inches or weighing 20 lbs or more must be “designed and shipped under Tier 1 (FFP – Frustration-Free Packaging) or Tier 2 (SIPP – Ship in Product Packaging) as part of their Frustration-Free Packaging initiative.”
The project aims to minimize packaging waste while enhancing the customer’s unboxing experience.
What Is Frustration-Free Packaging?
Frustration-free packaging refers to packaging that is crafted for easy opening and reduces waste significantly.
This packaging typically arrives in a recyclable box or envelope, free from superfluous wrapping materials such as plastic straps, wire ties, or clamshell casings. It is crafted to be opened swiftly and effortlessly, usually featuring a tear strip or another straightforward mechanism.
Amazon initially launched this initiative in 2008 for a few chosen brands. Since then, the program has expanded significantly and is currently being applied to a broader range of products available on Amazon.
What are the Packaging Requirements?
There are three tiers of Frustration-Free Packaging program by Amazon:
- Tier 1 | FFP (Frustration-Free Packaging)
- Tier 2 | SIOC (Ships in Own Container)
- Tier 3 | PFP (Prep-Free Packaging)
Frustration-Free Packaging Requirements
- Easy to Open – content removable by the customer within 120 seconds
- 100% Recyclable Packaging
- Minimal Packaging
What’s Excluded From This Program?
Amazon has excluded items where no added shipping packaging could result in a poor customer experience, such as intimate or high-value items, fragile items, and collectibles, or where handling the item may be dangerous to Amazon workers and/or our delivery partners, such as items with sharp edges.
Are Fragile Items Eligible for This Program?
Fragile items, which are any items that could easily leak or break during the fulfillment process, may qualify to ship in product packaging but must undergo more rigorous testing first.
Test and Evaluate Packaging
To qualify for enrollment in the SIPP program, all product packaging must successfully pass physical performance assessments through a self-conducted drop test or the International Safe Transit Association (ISTA) 6 laboratory test.
Determine if you can self-test or have an ISTA 6 lab test your packaging:
- Self-Test: Applicable if the product is non-fragile, and does not contain liquids or sharp items, and is not granular with a diameter <1”
- ISTA 6 Lab Test: If your product is fragile or contains sharp items or liquids, you cannot self-test. You must submit an ISTA-6A lab report from an ISTA-6 lab in Amazon’s APASS network for certification.
