Amazon Turns to AI to Weed Out Damaged Goods
- Amazon is deploying artificial intelligence (AI) in its largest warehouses to inspect products for damage prior to shipping them to customers. The implementation of AI is expected to reduce the number of damaged items, increase efficiency in picking and packing, and contribute to Amazon’s overall goal of automating more of its fulfillment operations. Currently, warehouse workers manually check items for wear and tear, which can be time-consuming and mentally demanding. Amazon estimates that less than 0.1% of the items it handles are damaged, but given the company’s enormous volume of approximately 8 billion packages per year, this still amounts to a significant number. During the picking and packing process, goods are assessed for damage as they move through an imaging station. If an item is flagged as damaged, it will be further inspected by a worker, while undamaged items proceed to be packed and shipped. Amazon trained the AI using images of both undamaged and damaged items to teach it to identify imperfections and distinguish between the two.

Amazon’s Kill List: 37 Projects that are no more
- Under Jeff Bezos’ leadership, Amazon encouraged employees to pitch and develop product ideas with minimal bureaucratic interference. However, since Andy Jassy took over as CEO, Amazon has shifted its focus from launching new products to cutting them. This retrenchment is a response to a slowdown in growth and the elimination of 27,000 corporate jobs. Jassy has emphasized the need for teams to simplify, prioritize, and allocate budgets wisely, with a renewed focus on price, selection, and convenience. The previous “see what sticks” product strategy is now on pause.
